Officer titles and responsibilities


Chief

A-    In charge of all operations of the fire department

B-    In charge of public safety, fire safety, and fire investigations

C-    Administrative work such as reports, fire contracts, and grants.  Develop and maintain fire department budget, I.S.O.  Fire Rating, disaster plans, fire inspections, mutual aid, and insurance companies.

D-    Administrate local and state codes

E-    Purchasing equipment and supplies

F-    Know all equipment

G-    Use of I.C.S. Systems

H-    Must carry a portable radio and notify an officer if leaving the fire district

I-    Personnel
 
 

Assistant Chief

A-    Assist fire chief with everyday operations of the fire department

B-    Will be acting fire chief when chief is not available or take charge of department until chief arrives

C-    Must carry a portable radio to notify chief or other officers before leaving the fire district

D-    Help chief with preplans of all major building or business

E-    Understand and be able to use I.C.S. Systems

F-    Know all equipment

G-    Fire prevention program
 
 

Fire Captain

A-    Assist Chief or Assistant Chief with fire calls and maybe some day to day business

B-    Understand all operations of the fire department

C-    Must carry a portable radio to notify chief or other officers before leaving the fire district

D-    Take charge of a call when the Chief or Assistant Chief is not available, or until they arrive

E-    Know basic fire reports

F-    Know all equipment

G-    Know preplans and the I.C.S. system
 
 

Training Officer

A-    In charge of all drills (1 per month)

B-    Document all drills, training, and extra training of all fire fighters

C-    Must notify safety officers and Chief of the planned drill

D-    Know the type of area covered and the hazards in the fire department

E-    Take charge of a call Chief, Assistant Chief, or Captains are not available

F-    Know all equipment and the I.C.S. system

G-    Portable radio does not have to be carried at all times but should be available for fire calls
 
 

Safety Officer

A-    Assist with fire fighter safety at all calls and drills

B-    Report to officer in charge of call to see if needed for scene safety for fire fighters

C-    Know and understand the I.C.S. system

D-    Know the preplans and hazards in the fire district

E-    Document all unsafe actions at a fire or drill and notify officer in charge

F-    If corrective action is needed at a scene, notify officer in charge

G-    Contact training officer for information on all drills to plan a safety part of the drill

H-    In charge of infection control including the plan, training, and records of the department

I-    Be a member of the city safety committee (meet a min. of 2 meetings per year) per DILHR 30

J-    Check all S.C.B.A. and a monthly test

K-    In charge if Chief, Assistant Chief, Captain, or Training officer is not available for a call

L-    Portable radio does not have to be carried at all times but should be available for fire calls
 
 

Equipment Officer

A-    Set up a weekly test for all equipment including small equipment (per DILHR 30)

B-    Document all equipment tested

C-    Document all problems

D-    Fix, notify Chief or Assistant Chief of problem, or contact city mechanic

E-    If unable to contact any of the above, take the equipment or unit out of service

F-    If a truck has to be taken out of service, run a page to make fellow fire fighters aware

G-    Tag all equipment if it is out of service with a red tag
